The statue of Charles Darwin outside Shrewsbury Library

This building was previously Shrewsbury School where local lad Charles Darwin studied before attending Endinburgh University.

Charles Darwin's tutor was Samuel Butler, who Darwin hated - too much Latin and Greek!. Although Darwin lived only a short walk away he was a border at the school and he throught nothing of the spartan living conditions. Darwin was not a natural acedemic and one wonders what his tutor would make of the statue of Darwin outside the school building.

Darwin's Statue

The statue of Charles Darwin sitting outside the towns library (his former school) was designed by H. Montford and was erected in 1897.
