Shrewsbury Festivals and other events

As county town, Shrewsbury is home to some of Shropshire's biggest fairs and festivals.

There are events in Shrewsbury all year. The Cartoon Festival in April, when the streets fill with art. The Regatta in May, when the Severn fills with boats. And the Flower show in August, when The Quarry fills with flowers.

The first major event in the Shrewsbury calendar is February 12th. Charles Darwin's birthday. It's the start of a week of celebrations in honour of Shrewsbury's most famous resident. With lectures, walks and plenty of science and nature-based activities to inspire you.

Then in April, cartoonists from all over the world fill The Square with larger-than-life drawings for the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival. You can get your caricature done, or learn some tips and tricks of the trade on a workshop.

The Summer Season brings over 100 days of visual arts, music, drama, spoken word and comedy to to Shrewsbury's streets and theatres.

In May, some of the world's greatest children's writers come to town for the Shrewsbury Children's Bookfest (don't be surprised if you spot Jacqueline Wilson or Michael Morpurgo in the crowd).

And about a week later is the Shrewsbury Regatta, when Pengwern Boat Club becomes the backdrop for two days of river races (think Henley Regatta, without the fancy blazers or formality).

In August, The Quarry fills with blooms for the Shrewsbury Flower Show - a 125-year fixture that's as famous for its fireworks, horse shows, military bands and choirs as its flowers.

And towards the end of August, the Shrewsbury Folk Festival brings big names like KT Tunstall or Richard Thompson to town.

Come December, the Christmas Market comes to the The Square - with stalls selling local and handmade gifts and tasty treats. Christmas at Attingham Park, with its own deer park, is always magical. There are carols, organ recitals and winter fairs happening all over town. And finally, the big fireworks show to ring in the New Year.
